Determination of water content

The water contained in a plastic for investigation is released by heating the sample and fed into a Karl Fischer reaction solution using dried nitrogen. The water content is determined by means of coulometric titration and is given as a percent.

The level of moisture present in plastics has a major impact on the result in MVR testing, for example. Residual moisture often leads to a degradation in the polymer chain, resulting in a higher MVR value.
This is why it is necessary to stipulate the drying period and temperature for the respective product.
