FMVSS
This material test is used to determine the burning behaviour of the materials employed for interior fittings in motor vehicles.
It calculates the burning rate of materials after ignition by a small flame. It is particularly important for assessing the safety of the materials used in the passenger compartment.
The test is performed in a special combustion chamber. The specimen is clamped in a U-shaped frame and arranged in a horizontal position relative to the flame. The open end of the specimen is exposed to a defined flame for 15 s. During the test, the burned distance and the time taken to burn this distance are measured. The test also determines whether or not the flame is extinguished, and if so when.
Suitable test specimens:
Sheets 138 mm long and 60 to 100 mm wide or 356 mm long and 30 to 60 mm wide. The sheets must not be thicker than 13 mm.
