Determination of water content

This method is used to determine the amount of water contained in a test specimen.

The water contained in the plastic to be analysed is released by heating the specimen and then fed into a Karl Fischer reaction solution using dried nitrogen. The water content is determined by means of coulometric titration and is given in per cent.

The level of moisture present in plastics has a major impact on the result of MVR measurements, for example. Residual moisture often leads to a degradation in the polymer chain, expressed as a higher MVR value. This is why it is necessary to specify the drying time and temperature of the product concerned.
